Toilet Paper That Makes a Difference

We don’t really pay much attention to it until there’s a natural disaster/health crisis (*cough* COVID-19 *cough*) and all of a sudden, we’re hoarding it like it’s the difference between life and death.

We all rely so much toilet paper on a daily basis that I wouldn’t be surprised if you said you go through a roll every week. However, as long as we’re buying so much and not transitioning over to a bidet, the least we can do is educate ourselves about which companies to support.

Time to pay attention to where we’re getting it from!

Toilet Paper Brands to Support

Here are some of the reasons I like the companies on my list:

  • Shares profits to help developing countries
  • Made from recycled paper
  • If not made from recycled paper, plants more trees than it cuts down
  • Made from faster growing natural sources like bamboo

Who Gives a Crap

Who Gives a Crap donates 50% of its profits to non-profit organizations that work to improve access to hygiene, water and basic sanitation in developing countries.

In 2019, they donated $490,000. They are also a certified B Corporation, which means they balance purpose with profit.

Their toilet paper options are eco-friendly. You have the option of 100% recycled paper, or made from bamboo. Both options do not require cutting down healthy trees just to wipe your bum.

Their packaging also comes plastic-free but rolls are individually wrapped with tissue paper. These roles are shipped via  a large cardboard box.

Aria

For those that are really sensitive to toilet paper breaking on them, Aria sells a high-quality toilet paper brand that uses virgin trees but replants 3 trees for every 1 they use.

The trees are responsibly sourced and carry the SFI Certified Souring Standard, which promotes responsible forestry.

In terms of energy use, the company offsets 100% of the power that they use with renewable energy credits.

They come packaged in plastic (the whole set, not individually), but the packaging is 52% plant-based.

Reel

Reel Paper makes 100% bamboo toilet paper.

Bamboo is a sustainable choice because whereas 27,000 trees are cut down every day to wipe our bums, bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet and grows 3 feet every day.

For every 1 roll of toilet paper purchased, Reel donates a single-use biodegradable toilet bag to someone without access to a toilet. The toilet bag can neutralize the bacteria in the poo and then be used as fertilizer!

Reel paper ships completely plastic-free.

Seventh Generation

One of the first brands in this sustainability / impact-driven toilet paper space.

The brand covers a WIDE range of home products that tend towards natural ingredients, product transparency, and responsible sourcing.

They are a certified B Corp and donate 10% of their profits through it’s foundation.

You can order a bulk package of their 100% recycled toilet paper online, but the convenient thing about them being a big brand is that you can often find them in retail stores as well, for those looking to avoid the transportation emissions of toilet paper delivered to your door in a giant box.

You can also get the unbleached version, though both versions avoid dyes, inks, or fragrances.

Impactful Toilet Paper

There are a handful of socially-conscious and eco-conscious toilet paper companies now offering good products at reasonable prices.

Why JUST buy toilet paper when you can also buy toilet paper AND help out those less fortunate.

Let’s vote with our dollars and show companies that they can do well by doing good.

Effortless impact on your part. What are you waiting for?!
